The Composer's Journey
Wyland Stephenson composes dynamic music that bridges the worlds of opera and musical theatre, drawing on a wide spectrum of styles and ensembles to create works that are both theatrical and deeply expressive. His music invites listeners to feel the surging emotion of the great romantics through a contemporary tonal lens, unified by a fascination with the indescribably human sound of the voice.
His original works include The Other Side (2023), a high-fantasy musical journey reminiscent of a Dungeons & Dragons labyrinth, which later received a cast album release; Toyland (2020, with Tessa Barcelo), a darkly comedic cabaret of songs voiced by forgotten childhood toys that premiered online in December 2020; and The First and the Last (2024), a tragic opera that explores the moral dilemma of murder versus honor in early twentieth-century London, premiered at the CPS Performance Space at Bard College.
Also an accomplished arranger and orchestrator, Wyland has collaborated with Frank Sanchez and Lou Craft on From New York, You Don’t Get a Divorce (2025), which premiered at The Spark Theatre in Hudson, New York, and Camera Obscura (2026). He also contributed supplemental compositions and arrangements to Clayton Webb’s The Rome of the West (2023).
Wyland holds a Bachelor of Music in Composition from Bard College, where he studied with David Sytkowski and Missy Mazzoli, and is currently pursuing a Master of Music in Composition at the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University under the guidance of Michael Hersch.
